Meal Plan: Dec 9 – 15

This is the week to make tamales! Years ago my husband said, “We should learn how to make tamales.” For the first few years, we really meant me.

He disavows all knowledge of this, but my memory says this is how it went down. In recent years, however, he’s come to the plate and smacked it out of the park. He and the girls handle the masa “spreading” and I do the filling and rolling.

Neither of us have a Latino background, but as Californians we love the flavors of Mexican food. I’m hoping to have pictures and a post for you soon. But, so far this month, not everything has gone according to my wishes and desires. I’m holding the tamale making loosely, but hoping that I’ll be serving them for dinner at least once this week.

Here’s our menu plan for the week, with a few adjustments based on how last week followed the plan — or didn’t, as the case may be.

  1. Thanks for keepin’ it real.
Our week did not go as planned either. I had 3 concerts at school, and hubs felt it necessary to eat out for all of them. :/ Ah well, I’m ready this week. I’ve made jambalaya, chili, and spaghetti sauce for the week. Here’s our whole plan: http://testosteronepalace.blogspot.com/2012/12/december-menu-2-and-little-lipstick-fun.html

I think I may add your mexican rice recipe to our dinner tonight with Salsa Chicken.

  3. Tamales made an apperance on our plates last week. I’d suddenly got a taste for them and it took all week before I finally made up my mind to just make them. How funny you’re enjoying them this week!

  4. Yumm… I love tamales.. They’re one of my very favorite things. How awesome that your hubby & kids help you out. My poor hubby would probably fall over dead if I asked him to help me make them.. however, since he knows how much I love them, and dont enjoy making them.. every 3 or 4 months, he’ll go over to a near by town where there is a Mexican store and taqueria where they make them every Saturday. He’ll bring me back about 8 or 10 dozen, all different types… pork, la lengua, poblano & cheese, and once even a few strawberry tamales. Yum! I never met a tamale I didnt love.. even the canned ones.. haha. Looking forward to your pics & tamale post!

Im going to borrow some of your weekly dinner ideas.. they sound great to me! :)
    Have a great week!

  5. PLEASE, Please, please… post a video on how to make them start to finish. Yours look REALLY good! I’d love to try to make them with my kids over Christmas vacation. Thanks!!
