Soup for dinner is a fantastic, frugal meal that can suit every age, stage, preference, and level of picky eaters. But, what to serve with soup?
When my kids were little, I could throw a bag of oyster crackers on the table, and they would be delighted. (You know how good those things are, right?)
And while soup with crackers is perfectly acceptable, sometimes you might want to make your soup dinner a little bit… extra, as the kids say. Consider these easy and delicious side dishes to serve with soup.

Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Soup and sandwiches is a classic meal going back decades, maybe even centuries. John Montagu invented the modern sandwich back in the 1700s, after all.
Sandwiches, whether they be hot, cold, or room temperature are a perfect side dish for soup. Grilled cheese sandwiches in particular are ideal.
The following grilled cheeses sandwiches and panini are great sides.

Salads
The diner-style soup and salad combo is a classic budget meal. You can get plenty of veggies into both courses while maintaining a high level of flavor and textures.
Serve soup with a salad for a fresh-tasting, hearty meal. You can make a dinner salad as simple or as loaded as you like. These classic salad recipes take just minutes to make.

Fresh Breads
Ultimately, you don’t have to get complex. Soup can be a one-course meal, but add some fresh crusty bread or a few slabs of garlic bread and you’ve got a feast fit for a king.
While crusty breads and biscuits from the corner bakery are delicious, these homemade bread recipes are easy to make and are perfect for serving with soup. Consider baking a double batch and freezing half for a future soup night.

I’d love to know what you consider ideal for serving alongside soup. Remember a handful of crackers or chips works just as well if you want to keep things simple.
