You’ve got a pound of ground and half an hour. What do you make for dinner? Sloppy Joes, my friend!
An easy loose meat sandwich consisting of ground beef and a seasoned tomato sauce, the Sloppy Joe is the best way to stretch a pound of meat while enjoying a hearty meal.
This scratch recipe for Sloppy Joes is not only easy, but it’s got a perfect balance of spices and flavors in the meat sauce – all made from regular grocery staples!
Why Make Our Homemade Sloppy Joes Recipe
It’s easy. You can prep this delicious recipe in less than 30 minutes in the slow cooker, instant pot, or fry pan on the stove. It’s super easy and contains just a handful of ingredients, one of our favorite 5-ingredient ground beef recipes.
It’s real food. Unlike store bought sauces and mixes, this Sloppy Joes recipe relies on simple seasonings and lean ground beef — no additives, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners. It’s just good real food.
You can make it the way you like it. When you make homemade, you can adjust the seasonings and sauce ingredients to your preferences! We like our Sloppy Joes just barely sweet here, so I use the lower amount of brown sugar. If you prefer them very sweet, use more. If you’re eating paleo or Whole 30, omit the sugar completely and serve the mixture over cauliflower rice or potatoes. When you make Sloppy Joes from scratch, you can make them exactly the way you like.
It’s make-ahead. Sloppy Joes are the perfect make-ahead meal. You can set it and forget it in the crockpot or make a double batch and freeze half for later.
It’s cheap. Canned sauce will cost you more than making it yourself — without the ability to mix and match your favors or shop your kitchen to save money. Making homemade will save you money, especially when you make a dish based on our budget grocery list.
It’s delicious. This homemade sloppy joe meat mixture is out of this world flavorful, perfect for a busy night supper, weekend lunch with friends, or anytime you want to enjoy an easy dinner recipe.
Ingredients
?Here’s what you’ll need to make traditional sloppy joes from scratch:
ground meat – As a loose meat sandwich, sloppy joe’s call for lean ground beef, ground pork, ground turkey, or ground chicken. You can use any protein for your main ingredient.
onion – I like to use fresh, chopped onion in this classic recipe, though some prefer chopped green pepper. Use your favorite — or both! Remember you can freeze onion or freeze bell peppers for later use.
spice mix – Jamie’s Spice Mix is a custom blend that I make that works perfectly in this homemade sloppy joe recipe. It contains onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, dried basil, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, lemon zest, and ground cayenne pepper. You can use another spice mix, like Trader Joe’s 21 Seasoning Salute if you prefer.
tomato sauce – Plain tomato sauce gives enough body along with the spices and brown sugar to make this a flavorful sauce.
brown sugar – Store-bought sauce for sloppy joe’s can be too sweet which makes it a great thing to make yourself. You can control how much added sugar there is. Add brown sugar to taste.
Worcestershire sauce – This bottled condiment is traditional in homemade sloppy joe sauce. You can omit it if you prefer.
buns or rolls – I like to make homemade hamburger buns – it takes this easy sloppy joe recipe over the top. Some folks prefer to serve toasted hamburger buns. Try it both ways to see which you prefer.
optional toppings – We love to pile on sliced pickles and cheddar cheese, but there are other toppings you might also serve with sloppy joe’s, such as chopped fresh onion, BBQ sauce, hot sauce, mustard, or even sliced jalapeños.

Freezing Instructions
To freeze: Place the meat mixture in an airtight container or freezer bag. Chill completely before storing in the freezer. Thaw and reheat to serve.
FAQ
There’s much debate about the origin of the Sloppy Joe Sandwich, its origins supposedly ranging from Cuba to Sioux City, Iowa in restaurants operated by men named Joe. It’s clear that the classic dish originated in the early 20th century, as a loose meat sandwich prepared quickly and cheaply, but its exact birthplace is a little more mysterious.
The sloppy joe mixture will last 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator as long as it properly stored.
Manwich is a sauce for sloppy joes that was first brought to market in the 1960s. It currently sells for $1.42/15-ounce can at my local Walmart. You can make a homemade sauce with natural ingredients for much less!

Really tasty. Used one teaspoon brown sugar, smoked paprika, two teaspoons of salt and one teaspoon Montreal Steak seasoning.
Note: had 1.7 pounds of ground beef

Glad you enjoyed it and were able to make some tasty tweaks!

I loved the sweet and spicy flavors of this recipe. (Used 2 Tbsp of brown sugar). We too grew up on manwich. This is nothing like it at all. So many easy on hand spices make this a winner
Jessica Fisher
So nice to hear! Yay!

I did not have tomato sauce on hand so I used crushed tomatoes and cooked them down more. We used less brown sugar since we do not like really sweet sloppy Joes. Delicious, quick and easy recipe. I have added this to my next bulk cooking plan so I will have bags of it in my freezer ready to go. Another great recipe for the meal plan!
Jessica Fisher
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it.

I was a bit leery when making this as I was raised on Manwich. I’ve never made my own Sloppy Joes and had always wanted to So I gave it a try. So glad I did, it was fantastic. I made this as the recipe was written, using ground beef and 2T of brown sugar. Next time I’ll probably use half the amount of thyme, only because it seemed a bit too much to me. But that’s just my personal taste. This is a winner for us – quick, homemade, and everyone liked it!! Thank you for sharing this recipe!
Jessica Fisher
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your feedback!

I so rarely have any kinds of buns in stock that I never think to make these. If I have ground beef, I usually cook it with mushrooms or I make taco meat for burrito bowls. I like the “serve over cauliflower rice” idea as well as mixing in some lentils with the meat. Bet the resident carnivore would not even notice. Hmmm. Thanks!
Jessica Fisher
Yep. It’s a pretty versatile filling. Did you try the lentils yet?
Juli
This recipe hit the spot for our family. I don’t think we need the slow cooker for one batch though. Nice to have the option when cooking for a crowd. The pickles were a nice touch. Thanks for another winner dinner!
Jessica Fisher
Glad you liked it. Yes, the slow cooker is really going to depend on what’s going on (people in and out) or how many people you have to feed. Thanks so much for the feedback!

Made for dinner this evening. It’s a delicious recipe, thank you.

I made this recipe last night and everyone loved it. I didn’t change a thing. Thanks for sharing!
Jessica Fisher
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it!

How long do you cook the meat under pressure? Is it high or low pressure?
Jessica Fisher
You don’t need pressure. You can prepare it completely on saute.

Lentil sloppy joes are awesome! I have a great recipe, if interested.
Jessica Fisher
Sounds like a great plant-based option!
Mary
We sometimes have mushroom soup sloppy joes. Take a can of cream of mushroom soup, adding a little bit of milk to thin it, and add it to your cooked hamburger. Heat & serve on hamburger buns.

Hi Jess, Sandwiches, soup, stews, casseroles and steak are the big things around here! I like the idea of sloppy joes without sweet because I am not a sweets type of person! Very cool. All the best! Alex
Amanda (TheHomemadeKitchen)
Those Sloppy Joes look really good and quite different from any I have ever had. I hope you share the recipe:) I linked up Chicken Lo Mein.

We love sloppy joes around here too! My fix for soggy buns is to broil them so they get a bit crispy then put a slice of cheese on each side (usually some kind of white cheese) and broil that. It acts as a barrier for the sauce!
Delilah Moran
Never made sloppy joes before so this was fun!.used the slow cooker version and really wouldn’t change a thing. 🙂
Jessica Fisher
Great! Glad you enjoyed the recipe!
melissa @IWasBornToCook
That looks like a great sandwich.
nancy
please share both recipes – – sloppy joes & couscous. i’ve got a girl that hates sloppy joes for the same reason your hubby did!
Susan
LOVE sloppy joes! i got a 4 ingredient recipe one that the kids LOVE from the daycare I work at. the 4 oldest kids can polish off 1 pound of it themselves! i paired it with a crockpot brussel sprout recipe that I got from another blogger here in blogland and FAIL! my kids are definate brussel sprout eaters as am I but this was just awful! I felt bad for having to throw it away….
Steph
My favorite version of sloppy joes pairs the vinegar with the sugar well enough that I don’t hate the sweet. Glad you found something that works!
Jen Blacker
I love sloppy joe’s, sadly my hubby hates them. Darn it! Thank you for hosting. This week I shared a recipe I saw Anne Burrell make: Smashed Potato Gratin.
Joni Olsick
If you like sloppy joe’s just make it and freeze single portions in containers, so when you want a sloppy joe, take one out to thaw, sloppy joe’s don’t have to go on a bun, bread works just as well.

LOVE sloppy joes and how much better they can be made at home!
