Having spent a year in France during my college years, the baguette sandwich is a familiar friend. It was a quick lunch to grab for a few francs back in the day, and it continues to be a favorite meal now that we live just two miles from a real French bakery.
While a baguette sandwich can be pretty simple — in France, it’s often just a few slices of ham and emmenthal cheese — it’s so much fun to dress it up a bit, especially when you combine the baguette sandwich with favorite foods from other cultures
The Cheese and Pickle Baguette Sandwich marries the Brits and the French, while a classic banh mi loads a baguette with the flavors of Vietnam.
This turkey baguette sandwich is a mix of cultures, much like my home state of California. French baguette, California avocado, lean turkey breast, and a chipotle mayonnaise. Throw in some tomato, lettuce, and sweet onion for good measure. So good!
Why Make This
It’s easy – Making baguette sandwiches is just a question of layering the ingredients so that they don’t all squish out when you take a bite.
Baguette sandwiches are super versatile. Serve these for lunch or dinner, pack them for a picnic, or serve them at a party or game day gathering. Everyone loves them!
They are an affordable alternative to take-out. Making your own subs or baguette sandwiches at home is so much cheaper than buying premade sandwiches — and you can customize them however you like!
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make these turkey baguette sandwiches:
French baguette – You can buy baguette at most grocery stores and bakeries, but you can also try baking my baguette recipe at home. Alternatively, you can assemble these sandwiches on a sub roll if that’s what you have available.
chipotle mayo – You can make your own chipotle mayo or buy the commercial brand. For a slightly different flavor, you can use homemade mayonnaise or go in a different direction entirely and use Herbed Mayonnaise for your spread.
deli sliced turkey breast – I use thick sliced deli meat, but you can also use Roast Turkey Breast you’ve cooked yourself.
Other sandwich fillings – I love serving these baguette sandwiches with sliced tomato, sweet onion, avocado, and lettuce leaves. Use your imagination and what’s in the veggie drawer to add layers to your sammies.
Variations
There are so many different ways to make a baguette sandwich. This is just one delicious option. Consider swapping out the meat and mayo for one of these variations:
- sliced ham, butter, and pickles
- cheddar and English Pickle
- hard cooked egg, vegetables, and Dijon Vinaigrette
- roast beef, cheddar, and horseradish sauce
- sliced zucchini, shredded carrot, and Easy 3-Ingredient Basil Sauce
- your favorite cooked meat, pate, chopped cilantro, pickled onions and carrots, sliced cucumbers for a homemade banh mi
Step-by-Step Instructions
It’s super easy to assemble a baguette sandwich:
- Cut the baguette in half crosswise and then halve each portion lengthwise. Spread the chipotle mayonnaise on the top of each baguette half.
- On the bottom of each baguette half, layer the turkey, tomato, onions, avocado, and lettuce.
- Place the top of the baguette on each sandwich and serve immediately.
Make-ahead: Wrap and refrigerate the sandwiches up to 1 day ahead, but for the best texture, store the mayonnaise separately and add it right before serving.
FAQs & Recipe Costs
Split the baguette lengthwise, leaving a bit of a hinge. Add your favorite fillings, and close.
It really depends on your preferences. Baguette has a lot of crust and very little soft insides. It’s good if you like crust, but if you prefer soft sandwiches, bread is a better option.
The sky is the limit when it comes to filling a baguette. Cheese, meat, and veggies are all good options. Avoid mayo salads like egg or tuna as they tend to squish out when you take a bite.
Recipe Costs
Knowing how much it costs you to prepare a recipe can help you decide if it’s the type of recipe to make regularly or one you might want to save for special occasions. Let’s crunch some numbers and see how this recipe pencils out.
- chipotle mayo – $0.40
- French baguette – $4.00
- deli sliced turkey breast – $3.00
- tomato – $0.50
- sweet onion – $0.25
- avocado – $1.00

While your costs may vary depending on where and how you shop, you can expect to pay about $9.65 for Baguette Sandwiches for 4, about $2.41/serving.

I have a question about the cost of baguettes. Are baguettes $2 a loaf at the bakeries where you live. I live close to two bakeries and they are $4 a piece. So the price of making sandwiches for 4 would be $8 correct (each baguette making two sandwiches)? Do you still consider that a good deal? With homeschooling, I just don’t have time to try making my own right now. Maybe one day!
Also, I have a question about avocados. I love them, I never know what they should look like when I buy them. The ones here are either hard and bright green, or black and kind of soft.

I made this without the turkey, just veggies and it was delicious! The chipotle mayo is where it’s at.

Do you know how many calories this sandwich is per serving? Thank you.
Jessica Fisher
I don’t. Sorry.
Debbie
Loved these recipes. I will make the salad today. I hope it will still taste great if I eliminate the anchovy paste from the vinaigrette dressing. Great pictures too. Thanks for sharing. Debbie
Jessica
It will. 😉

Can you tell me the brand is and/or what the chipotles in adobo sauce should look like in the mexican aisle? Thanks… I want to try this.
Jessica
@Ellen, here’s one brand: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00061DFEQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=oflwtf-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00061DFEQ It should be a pretty small can, near the canned green chiles and jalapenos.

How does the Avacado do when put in the fridge? I was thinking of making these for my husband and I to bring to work during the week. Will the avacado survive though, or get all nasty and black if I pre-make these the night before or the morning of?
Jessica
Yeah, the avocado would get yucky. If I’m sending hubby with an avo, I send it with him whole with a spoon. It’s good fat. 🙂
Kristine
I’ve got to know… what bakery are you talking about! Will be in San Diego next week for two weeks. Specifically in San Elijo Hills.
Amy
You had me at Chipotle mayonnaise. Looks great.

Where do we submit a sandwich entry? I don’t see it on the Outstandwich.com website.
Jessica
@Heather Ratliff, just above in the inlinkz. I get to submit one entry based on the linkies. Voting starts on Sunday.

Sandwich looks very good :)..
1/2 Mayo means, 1/2 cup mayo? (In the chipotle mayo section)
Jessica
Thanks for finding my typo. It’s 1/2 cup regular mayonnaise that you mix with the chipotle that you can find canned in the Mexican foods section.
