Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make Sourdough French Toast:
eggs – You may not need all the eggs called for in the recipe. Sourdough has a different texture that other breads and seems not to absorb as much liquid as other breads. Start with the smaller amount and make more custard if needed.
milk – I use dairy milk, but you can use a plant-based milk if you prefer.
honey – This is a classic complement to the tang of the bread. If you prefer you can use maple syrup or sugar. I recommend extra honey for serving.
salt – I little bit of salt helps with the texture of the custard. Don’t omit it if you can.
butter – I use butter for frying the toast in a skillet as well as for topping the golden brown slices. You can also use oil or nonstick spray.
sourdough bread – This can be homemade or sourdough bread. Be mindful that very soft sourdough will absorb more of the custard, while dense sturdy bread with lots of holes will absorb less of it.
optional add-ins – You can add vanilla extract, vanilla paste, or ground cinnamon to the egg mixture.

FAQs
Sourdough bread is not first choice for breads used in French toast as it’s not as absorbent as other breads and has more tang. However, with the right amount of custard and a dose of honey, it can be delicious!
Some people don’t like the tang or sourness, so offer toppings that complement or offset that flavor, such as fresh berries, honey, maple syrup, whipped cream, sliced bananas, or chopped nuts.
This is a great make-ahead breakfast. Cool and wrap slices. Store in the fridge for up to 4 days. Freeze for longer storage. Reheat in the toaster, oven, or air fryer.
