What’s on My Plate?
Hamburgers are a great meal for my family because it incorporates so many things in one handheld package. I don’t really need to make side dishes, but I usually offer cut up veggies and apples since I know few of my children are really going to add the lettuce and tomato to their hamburgers.
And no, pickles aren’t a vegetable, but our kids think they are prerequisite to every burger meal.
This meal is also an easy fix since I started freezing the patties ahead of time. I mix up my own ground beef mix, form the patties and then freeze them. They cook very easily from frozen, making them a great spur of the moment meal.
What makes them “more” is serving them on homemade buns. I started baking my own hamburger rolls almost ten years ago — and I kind of got myself in trouble by doing so. No one wants to eat grocery store hamburger buns any more! I still buy them when I feel lazy, but no, they’re not as good as homemade.
This recipe is my go-to recipe for hot dog and hamburger buns. This week, however, I decided to follow a new kitchen tip from Tammy’s Recipes. And boy! Do I feel fancy! Tammy offers a fantastic video tutorial for shaping homemade kaiser buns.
I was stunned at how easy it was to make these. And they looked so much prettier than the standard hamburger bun.
It got me thinking how important presentation is to our frugal meals. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you spend on the meal, but if it’s made in love and served with just a little effort at beauty, well, then it’s a meal fit for a king.
