Homemade Chipotle Mayo is a fantastic topping for burgers and sandwiches, but it’s equally good for dipping fries or roast vegetables.

Serve this spicy chipotle mayo on Turkey Avocado Baguette Sandwich, alongside Sweet Potato Fries or Air Fryer Cauliflower, or as part of a Sandwich Bar on a Budget. You can make as little or as much as you like, so there’s no waste!

    • Homemade Chipotle Mayo

Some of the best burgers I’ve ever eaten have been adorned with Chipotle Mayo. It goes equally well in a Spicy Jalapeno Burger as it does in a Turkey Burger with Blue Cheese.

Trust me on the Blue Cheese thing. It’s a winning combo!

I always ask for extra Chipotle Mayo so I can dip my fries. So delicious, it’s like a party in your mouth.

    Why Make This

You can avoid food waste. Making your own sauces and condiments means you can make as little — or as much — as you will actually use. No more of the fridge door filling up with half empty containers. Make just what you need!

Chipotle Mayo is delicious homemade. When you make your own chipotle mayonnaise, you can choose exactly what kind of mayo to use (you know you have a favorite!) and how spicy you want it to be. You can taste and adjust to suit your preferences, not some dude at Big Food.

It’s super easy! With just two ingredients and only costing 5 cents/tablespoon, you can enjoy Chipotle Mayo on any and all the things! There are many homemade sauce recipes you can make and this is a great one!

    Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make your own Chipotle Mayo:

ingredients for making homemade chipotle mayo laid out on a black surface.

chipotle chile in adobo sauce from a can – There are typically about ten peppers in a standard can — a little goes a long way. Be sure to read the notes below for freezing the leftovers. If you prefer, you can use ground chipotle chile instead. The texture will be slightly different, but still delicious.

mayonnaise – You can make your own mayonnaise or buy your favorite brand.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

chopping chipotle peppers on a black cutting board.
adding the peppers to the mayonnaise in a small bowl on a black counter.
stirring the chipotle mayo with a spoon in a bowl on a black counter.
    1. If using a canned chipotle pepper, chop it finely.
    2. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise and chipotle chile and sauce (or ground chile powder).
    3. Stir well and refrigerate until ready to use.

Note about leftovers: there are few recipes that call for an entire can of chipotle peppers. Rather than let them go to waste (or binge on chipotle-flavored foods all week long) freeze them! You can do this in one of two ways:

    1. Divide them into small airtight containers or snack-size ziptop bags and store in the freezer. Be sure to label and date them.
    2. Lay out each chile on a sheet pan lined with a piece of parchment, distributing the sauce among them. Freeze until firm. Wrap up in the parchment and place in a labeled ziptop bag and store in the freezer.

    FAQ & Recipe Costs

    Does chipotle mayo have dairy?

When you make your own chipotle mayo, its contents will depend on what kind of mayonnaise you use. Traditional mayonnaise contains eggs, oil, and lemon juice, so it is dairy-free. You can use an egg-free mayo if you prefer.

    Is chipotle mayo gluten-free?

Chipotle mayo contains two main ingredients: mayonnaise which is typically gluten-free and chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, something that is also typically gluten-free. Be sure to read the labels of both ingredients to make sure your product is free from gluten.

    Is chipotle mayo spicy?

Chipotle peppers are fairly high on the Scoville scale, meaning your chipotle mayo could have a kick to it. Luckily you can make your own and adjust how spicy you want it to be based on how much chopped chipotle chile you add.

    Recipe Costs

Knowing how much it costs you to prepare a recipe can help you decide if it’s the type of recipe to make regularly or one you might want to save for special occasions. Let’s crunch some numbers and see how this recipe pencils out.

    • chipotle chile in adobo sauce from a can – $0.07
    • mayonnaise – $0.33

While your costs may vary depending on where and how you shop, you can expect to pay about 40 cents for a small batch of Chipotle Mayo, about $0.05/tablespoon!

I can put this on everything, right?? I made veggie sándwiches on a baguette with cucumber, tomato, red onion, and romaine and they were delicious. The corn suggestions below sounds tasty as well. Thanks for another great recipe!

Two things – first…did you notice on the can it says chiLpotle? Weird.

Second…This stuff is amazing stirred into corn (grilled is best; frozen is good too) with some Cotija cheese, fresh lime juice and a little cilantro (or not). Fantastic side dish for all your Mexi-meals!

Thanks for the homemade version…my store has been out of the “Big Food” brand!
