    • Homemade Ginger Ale

I love it when I have fresh ginger root in the fridge. It’s the perfect excuse to make a ginger-infused simple syrup to flavor teas, coffees, and other yummy drinks.

Homemade ginger ale is one of my favorites! It’s so delicious with a squeeze of lemon juice!

Like commercial ginger ale, this version is a tasty soft drink, a great soother for upset tummies, and a versatile mixer for cocktails. While traditional ginger ale is fermented, this is a simple soda flavored with real ginger and citrus.

    Why Make Homemade Ginger Ale

Making homemade means you get to control the ingredients. No high fructose anything in this easy drink. Make it with your favorite carbonated water or club soda.

No fizz going flat. You get to make just enough instead of being stuck with too much (or too little!) based on the store packaging. Drink all you want; you can easily make more! And, you don’t have to worry about a bottle going flat before you can enjoy it, so there’s no waste, either.

You can save money. DIY is a great way to save some coin. Since you control the amount you make, you can also save money over buying a big package. Stock up on ingredients when you see a sale and save even more.

It’s amazingly good. I can’t wait to hear what you think of this recipe. It’s so refreshing and energizing! Be sure to leave a starred review below.

    Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make homemade Ginger Ale:

ingredients to make homemade ginger ale on white counter.

ginger syrup – I make my own ginger syrup with sugar, fresh ginger root, and water. It’s super easy to whip up in no time at all. You can buy a commercial ginger syrup but it won’t have the same fresh flavor as homemade, plus you have more control over ingredients with homemade.

seltzer – I use seltzer because that’s what we typically have on hand. You can use club soda or a sparkling water of your choice. It can be flavored or plain. Citrus flavors are delicious with ginger.

ice cubes and lemon wedges – These are great for serving with ginger ale!

Variations: the following flavors all complement ginger well, so consider adding them to your homemade ginger ale: lemon, lime, pineapple, green tea, mint, or honey. You can also add cardamom and cloves to your ginger syrup for a spicy kick.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s how to make homemade ginger ale:

    ginger syrup in a glass.
ginger ale on ice in the glass.

Mix syrup with club soda to taste. Garnish with ice and lemon wedges.

glass of ginger ale with a lemon wedge floating in it.

    What to do with leftovers?

Ginger ale will go flat within a few hours, so only mix as much as you will drink during that time. You can easily store the syrup and (unopened) seltzer separately so that they last several weeks.

    FAQs

    What’s in ginger ale?

Commercial ginger ale contains carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, ginger extract, natural flavors, citric acid, preservatives, and colors. Making it homemade allows you to omit any ingredients you don’t like and to make a more natural beverage.

What’s the difference between ginger beer and ginger ale?

Ginger beer is more strongly flavored and can contain alcohol, while modern ginger ale is mellow and sweet with no alcohol content. In a pinch, you can use ginger ale in cocktail recipes that call for ginger beer.

What drinks are made with ginger ale?

The following beverages are made with ginger ale: whiskey ginger, shandy, Pimm’s cup, and the classic Shirley Temple Drink.
