A Blue Lagoon Mocktail brings together the best of all worlds – fresh and sparkling citrus flavors in a sweet bubbly drink — without the alcohol so everyone can enjoy a delicious budget bevy.
The original Blue Lagoon cocktail recipe, a drink developed in the 60s, features vodka, lemonade, and Blue Curacao. Now you can enjoy this fun blue drink at home — without the booze or the high bar tab.
If you love an icy, cold drink but don’t want to pay big bucks, you’ve come to the right place. Making homemade sodas and coffee drinks is one of my favorite pasttimes. We save money AND get to enjoy refreshing drinks at home that are usually better than what you’d get in the cafes and restaurants.
And with bar tabs inching ever higher in these days of shrinkflation, making virgin drinks at home can save you a bundle.
Why Make This
It’s delicious. Lemonade and soda water, flavored with blue curacao syrup (an orange simple syrup mocking the classic blue curacao liqueur), along with lemonade makes this blue drink not only fun to look at but super delish! Since there’s no alcohol, you can drink all the Blue Lagoon Mocktails you want.
It’s cheap. Booze and sodas are expensive! Making your own mixed drinks at home is a great way to cut costs. You can lower them even more by prepping non-alcoholic beverages.
It’s healthier. There are lots of reasons to opt out of alcoholic drinks. Whether you’re sober curious or want to avoid the excess calories of alcohol, a Blue Lagoon Mocktail is a fun option.
It’s easy to mix for a crowd. This drink with the fun blue color is perfect for a party when you might be serving wine and other cocktails, but still want to offer guests a glass of something-something without the alcohol. Pass around the pitcher of the blue mocktail!
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make a homemade Blue Lagoon mocktail:
seltzer – Some people like to make this Blue Lagoon mocktail with lemon lime soda, but I find that soda water does the job with a lot less sugar. You can use plain or flavored seltzer. I upped the orange in this version by using an orange flavored seltzer.
Blue curacao syrup – the liqueur of the same name is flavored with the dried peel of the laraha citrus fruit, a type of bitter orange, grown on the island of Curacao. It is dyed blue for fun. Several brands make a non-alcoholic blue curacao syrup.
lemonade – You can make homemade lemonade, buy your favorite bottled variety, or simply mix fresh lemon juice with simple syrup and water to make a quick fix.
ice – There are lots of options in how to serve a Blue Lagoon Mocktail. The standard is mixed with ice or crushed ice, shaken in a cocktail shaker, and then served on the rocks. Others blend in up in a blender for a frothy, slushy-type blue mocktail.
garnishes – You can garnish the drink with a maraschino cherry, a lemon wheel, or even a paper umbrella.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Here’s how to make a Blue Lagoon Mocktail without a cocktail shaker:
- Mix syrup and lemonade in a glass over ice. A hurricane glass is traditional, but not neccesary.
- Add seltzer to fill. Stir gently and serve your Blue Lagoon Mocktail with a smile.
FAQs
The vibrant blue color comes from the blue curacao syrup. It’s a simple syrup flavored with bitter orange.
You can turn any sweet beverage blue with a shot of leftover syrup. It’s typically used in other cocktails and mocktails like a Blue Moon or Blue Hawaiian. It’s fun to use at baby showers and blue-themed parties.
