    Everyone knows that the secret’s in the sauce, right? And if you’ve got a hankering for a spicy sauce that’s perfect for serving with fish, crab cakes, or po’ boys, then you’ve got to try this creamy remoulade sauce recipe!

    This is a classic spicy condiment that is delicious served in so many different ways.

    Why Make Our Remoulade Recipe

    This sauce is super easy to prepare. It takes just minutes to prep this remoulade recipe that is packed with flavor. 

    It’s cheap to make! If you can find bottled remoulade sauce — it’s not easily available nationwide — it will cost more than a few dollars. Making your own classic cajun remoulade sauce is cheap. Plus, you can make as little or as much as you like without worrying about a half bottle clattering in the fridge door for months on end.

    It’s delicious. This special sauce boasts robust cajun flavors that will spice up your favorite sandwiches and seafood dishes. I’ve even used it as a dipping sauce for meatballs and onion rings. So good!

    Fun Fact

    I developed this recipe when I was writing Good Cheap Eats Dinner in 30 Minutes or Less. In that cookbook, I took Fish and Chips and gave it a flavorful twist with a Cajun flair. My favorite Cajun Spice Blend adds a lovely kick to the beer batter you bread the fish with. And I created a Remoulade Tartar Sauce to go with. It’s perfect paired with the BBQ French Fries on page 75.

    What is Remoulade?

    A classic French remoulade is a cold mayo-based sauce with mustard, capers, chopped gherkins, herbs, and often anchovies. It’s served as a condiment for cold meat, fish, and shellfish. A Louisiana remoulade sauce, by contrast, dials up the spice factor with cajun spices or creole seasoning.

    Ingredients

    Here’s what you’ll need to make this easy remoulade recipe:

    mayonnaise – This remoulade recipe boasts a mayonnaise base. You can make homemade mayonnaise or your favorite store brand. If you’d like a tangier, protein-based sauce, substitute some of the mayo with Greek yogurt or try our Greek Yogurt Tartar Sauce.

    pickles – You’ll need finely chopped dill pickles or dill pickle relish. Some variations of this Louisiana sauce also call for capers. If you regularly keep capers in the pantry, go for it. If you prefer sweet pickle relish, you can use that as well.

    fresh lemon juice – You can use bottled juice, but freshly squeezed lemon will have the best flavor. If you don’t, you can add some extra pickle juice for zing. Remember you can freeze lemons, the juice and the zest if you’ve got extra.

    garlic – I like to mince a fresh garlic clove for this, but you can use garlic powder if that’s what you have on hand.

    mustard – Dijon mustard is traditional in French cuisine. You can use a creole mustard or whole grain mustard if you prefer.

    cajun seasoning – I make my own Cajun Spice Mix, but you can use whatever seasoning blend you prefer. For extra heat, add hot sauce or cayenne pepper.

    optional ingredients – some remoulade recipes also include fresh herbs like dill, as well as Worcestershire sauce or horseradish.

    How to Make Remoulade

    It’s so easy to make a remoulade sauce!

    Combine all ingredients in a small dish. This remoulade recipe makes ½ cup. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. 

    Serving Suggestions

    Spicy remoulade sauce pairs well with a crispy crab cake, fried fish sticks, or fried seafood, grilled vegetables, fried green tomatoes, and cold meats. It’s a delicious sandwich spread for hamburgers and po’boy sandwiches as well as pan-seared fish.

    This creamy sauce is a zesty substitute for anytime you use tartar sauce or mayonnaise.

    FAQs

    What’s the difference between tartar sauce and remoulade?

    They are similar mayo-based sauces served cold with fish and meats, however Cajun remoulade tends to have more spices and mustard.

    What’s the difference between French remoulade and Louisiana remoulade?

    The classic French sauce features capers, mustard, pickles, herbs, and anchovies. The cajun style remoulade has more spices.

    Can you buy remoulade sauce at the store?

    There are only a few brands of remoulade available nationwide. In Southern California, I can only get it through online ordering. Making homemade is cheaper and more convenient.

      Thanks for sharing this! I recently found out that I have an egg sensitivity-no mayo and feared going into lent without tartar sauce! I can make this with my vegan “mayo”. Friday fish night has been saved!
