?I’d heard of folks layering ravioli in a casserole dish and baking it, but I didn’t really see why it mattered. Until I made it.
A few months ago I got some fresh ravioli on sale and decided give it a whirl. My family was over the moon with this baked ravioli casserole. It’s so good, now one of our favorite pasta recipes. Better yet, it’s so easy!
This Ravioli Casserole is So Easy!
I’m not sure you could find an easier dinner recipe than this one. You don’t even have to cook the ravioli as the pasta bakes in the sauce. This one pan dinner is great for busy weeknights.
If you love classic lasagna, this is a treat to the taste buds without all the work. Serve it with some garlic bread and a side salad for a complete meal the whole family will love.
Ingredients
Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need to make this easy Ravioli Casserole:
bulk Italian sausage – I’ve made this ravioli recipe many times over the last few months and found that our favorite way to make it was with spicy Italian sausage. You can also use mild ground sausage, ground beef or ground turkey.
onion – I love the flavor that cooked onion with the sausage. You can use dried onion flakes if you don’t have fresh onion. Alternatively, you can add mushrooms or bell pepper if that’s what you enjoy.
spaghetti sauce – You can use a favorite jar of pasta sauce or make your own homemade marinara sauce. You can also substitute alfredo sauce if you’d like a creamier pasta casserole.
ravioli – I typically buy the spinach ravioli from Costco as that is the cheapest I’ve found. Free free to use mushroom ravioli or beef ravioli if you prefer. Ricotta ravioli is great as well. I use fresh ravioli but frozen ravioli will work as well.
mozzarella cheese – You’ll need shredded mozzarella to create that creamy lid to the casserole. Remember you can freeze cheese you might not use up right away.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Here’s how to make the best Ravioli Bake:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
In a skillet, brown the sausage and onion, until the sausage is cooked through and the onion is clear.
Spread ¼ cup sauce on the bottom of the prepared pan.
Place ½ the ravioli in the pan, spreading them out to make an even layer. Top with ½ the sausage and onion mixture. Pour ½ the sauce atop this. Top with 1 ½ cups cheese.
Repeat the layering process using the rest of the ravioli, meat mixture, sauce, and cheese.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until hot and bubbly. Serve immediately.
To Make Ahead: assemble according to the recipe and store the unbaked casserole in the fridge until ready to bake. Alternatively, you can freeze the casserole for a later day. Just thaw it overnight prior to baking.
Serving Suggestions: Serve ravioli casserole as you would lasagna, with a green salad or cooked vegetable with garlic bread or rolls on the side.
How to Make a Meal Prep: You can assemble the ravioli casserole in single-serve containers for meal prep. Just be sure that the dishes are oven safe. Bake and store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Make a Plan for Leftovers: Leftover ravioli bake is delicious reheated the next day. Promptly refrigerate leftovers and use within 4 days.
