Want to get festive without baking? Make Chocolate Dipped Oreos!
These cookies are super easy to make and are such a sweet treat to add to your next holiday or special occasion. They’re so easy, your kids can make these cookies all by themselves! They package up great to give as gifts.
Why Make This
It’s easy. With just four ingredients and a heat source to melt your chocolate candy, this is one of the easiest no-bake recipes ever. You can quickly and easily whip up a batch of Chocolate Dipped Oreos.
It’s fun. So versatile, you can swap out your chocolate melting wafers or candy coating for other colors or flavors as well as change the sprinkles to suit the occasion.
Make Oreos even better! If you’re a fan of those chocolate sandwich cookies, then you’ll love them dipped in chocolate.
Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own chocolate dipped Oreos:
chocolate chips – I use dark chocolate, but you can use candy melts or other flavored baking chips.
coconut oil or vegetable shortening – These two fats harden at room temperature which helps the chocolate set.
chocolate sandwich cookies, such as Oreos – Oreos are classic, but you can swap in another sandwich cookie if you prefer. Some folks even make their own sandwich “cookies” with Ritz crackers and a filling like nutella, peanut butter, or frosting. If you won’t use a full package Oreo cookies, you can use the leftovers to make Oreo Cookie Crumbs for other recipes.
sprinkles – Use whatever sprinkles or colored sugars you have. This is where you can really have fun, feel free to make these chocolate dipped oreos suit your occasion. See some options below.
Variations
Since you get to choose the color of sprinkles, you can customize these chocolate dipped oreos (or anything else you dip in chocolate) to match any occasion. You can also swap in white chocolate or colored candy melts to really embrace your theme. Consider these options:
- New Year’s – silver and white or go for the confetti look.
- Valentine’s – red, pink, and white; don’t forget the hearts!
- Mardi Gras – purple, yellow, and green
- St. Patrick’s Day – green and orange; shamrock sprinkles would be cute.
- Easter – pastels and Easter sprinkles – super cute with Easter Pretzels and Easter Oreos.
- Memorial, Independence, and Labor Days – red, white, and blue
- Halloween – orange or specific Halloween sprinkles
- Thanksgiving – orange, red, yellow
- Christmas – red and green, super cute next to Christmas Fudge, Chocolate Dipped Oreos are delicious served alongside a glass of Milk Nog.
- Other types of celebrations – You can also serve these for sporting events and bridal or baby showers. Just match the sprinkles to the team colors or party colors.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Making Chocolate Dipped Oreos is a pretty simple process. Here’s how to do it:
- In a microwave-safe plastic container (glass can get too hot!), melt chocolate in the microwave. You can also heat the chocolate in a crock pot or instant pot set on saute.
- Stir in the coconut oil and stir to blend.
- Using a toothpick inserted in each cookie, dip the cookies in the chocolate, letting any excess chocolate drop back int and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle with colored sugar or candy sprinkles.
- Once the chocolate sets, store the cookies in an airtight container.

FAQs
You can use candy melts if you like, but I prefer real chocolate, particularly dark chocolate. Any chocolate chips will work, however, provided that you don’t overheat the chocolate and that you add some coconut oil or shortening to help it firm up once dipped.
Provided that the chocolate doesn’t overheat and untemper, the chocolate dipped Oreos can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. If, for some reason, the chocolate doesn’t set at room temperature, chill them to set the chocolate and store them in the fridge. If it’s particularly hot, it’s good to refrigerate them as well.
Consume within a week or store in the freezer to extend the shelf life. If frozen, the chocolate coating may develop a bloom or white marks that occur when the fat particles in the chocolate separate. It will still be safe to eat, just not as cute.
The melted chocolate coating is great for dipping pretzels, marshmallows, and even potato chips.

oh, See’s candy. My uncle used to work there (he’s 91 now) and when he would come and visit us up in Canada he would bring a giant box of rejected chocolates (not fully covered, misshaped, that kind of thing). No idea what you would get, but all so good.
We’re going to try these cookies tomorrow. Oreos and chocolate, my kind of dessert!

I love those stories. My mom always send some back to her family in Minnesota before See’s expanded. I’ve had Whitman and Russell Stover, but I don’t think they can compete with Sees. Hope you enjoy the cookies!

I might melt the Christmas fudge in my freezer and dip some Oreos for Easter tomorrow.

Let me know if that works for you!

I know it’s not part of the Kraft recipe, but if you want to make your dipped Oreos rock even more, first dip the Oreos in mint chocolate (white chips tinted green with a little bit of your favorite mint flavoring – spearmint, peppermint, etc. – added), wait a few hours or a day for the first coat to harden, and then dip in the chocolate as described in your recipe. AWESOME!
Jessica
It wasn’t Kraft’s, just a recipe that I put together. Your way sounds very nice!

My favorite thing to dip in chocolate? My finger…lol

Strawberries are my favorite thing to dip in chocolate. Green Bay Packers Rock!

Thanks for sharing the link to the Kraft facebook page. I played the trivia game and they donated 81 meals to our local foodbank. 🙂

Aren’t you cute, thinking those would actually make it out of the kitchen and to some event… yeah, right!
Besides the cookies, pretzels, marshmallows, fruit, potato chips, I think I’ve seen chocolate popcorn but I’ve never made that one myself. I’ve learned that I tend to prefer the items only half-dipped rather then fully coated. You get a better chance to taste the flavor of both items, plus it is usually less messy to eat.
Jessica
@Sandi, wishful thinking? 😉
