Chocolate cookie crumbs are a key ingredient in pies, cookie bars, and other desserts, but finding them in a box, already crumbed, is near impossible. Make your own Oreo Chocolate Cookie Crumbs quickly and easily in the food processor.

With a supply of cookie crumbs on hand, you’ll be set to bake up Chocolate Coconut Bars, a Slow Cooker Chocolate Cheesecake, or a Sorbet & Ice Cream Pie with Chocolate Ganache.

    • How to Make Chocolate Cookie Crumbs

Oreo cookie crumbs are a much-needed ingredient when it comes to Hello Dolly Bars, pie crusts, or dirt pudding. These baking crumbs are also used for topping ice cream sundaes, frosted cakes, or layering in parfaits. Their chocolatey goodness adds both flavor and a bit of crunch to your favorite desserts.

The problem is that it’s often difficult to find chocolate cookie crumbs in a box!

Some stores carry them sometimes. You can order them online, but it’s usually cost prohibitive. Trust me, I’ve tried all the angles.

Chocolate cookie crumbs are just something you need to make yourself. And doing it in the food processor makes it quick and easy!

    Why Make This

It’s easier. Making your own chocolate cookie crumbs in the food processor is a quick process that takes just minutes.

It can be cheaper. While you can buy cookies already crumbed, the boxes are often incredibly expensive. It’s much cheaper to grind your own baking crumbs.

It avoids food waste. Since you’re going to smash up a bunch of cookies, you can use already broken cookies or even those that have gone a bit stale. Most uses for cookie crumbs call for baking them into a crust, similar to a graham cracker crust, so the texture will crisp up in the oven.

    Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make chocolate cookie crumbs:

open oreos pacakge showing full rows of cookies.

Yep, that’s it! You can make chocolate cookie crumbs with Oreos or other chocolate sandwich cookies, even the gluten-free variety.

But you aren’t limited to just sandwich cookies! If you don’t want to take the time to scrape out the filling, you can make cookie crumbs from chocolate Teddy Grahams instead. In fact, they work better in my slow cooker cheesecake than traditional sandwich cookies.

    Variations:

Baking crumbs can be made from a variety of cookies and crackers, such as

    • graham crackers
    • digestives
    • speculoos (Biscoff)
    • shortbread
    • another favorite cookie
    • pretzels
    • sweet bunny or bear crackers

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s how to make baking crumbs in the food processor:

    • chocolate cookies in food processor bowl next to scraped off filling in a small dish nearby.
    • all the cookies in the food processor bowl.
    • the lid on the food processor with the cookies inside.

    1. Using a knife scrape out the filling from the cookies. You can use the filling for another purpose such as stirring into ice cream or using as a cake filling.
    2. Place the cookies in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade.
    3. Secure the lid and run the machine until fine crumbs are formed. You may need to scrape down the sides and/or pulse the machine to break up larger chunks.

How to Make Cookie Crumbs Without a Food Processor.

If you don’t have a food processor or blender, you can still make chocolate cookie crumbs.

    1. Place the cookies in a ziptop plastic bag. Press out the air and seal the bag.
    2. Using a rolling pin or large bottle, press the cookies in the bag until they crumble. You shouldn’t need much force to do this; the cookies should easily crumble.
    3. Proceed with your recipe.

    Storage

Store extra crumbs in an airtight container in the freezer, for up to 2 months. They should be recipe ready when you pull them from the freezer.

    FAQs

Do you have to scrape out the filling from the sandwich cookies?

While you can pulse the sandwich cookies with their filling, the crumbs will have extra moisture, making it difficult to absorb the butter for making a crumb crust, in which case, you’ll likely want to reduce the amount of butter.

Can you make cookie crumbs in a blender?

You can make cookie crumbs in a blender with a very wide bowl. Narrow pitchers will be more difficult to break down all the cookies, so you may need to work in small batches.

Can you buy Oreo cookie crumbs?

Oreo does sell cookie crumbs, however they aren’t available at all stores, and even then, they are often a seasonal item. You can order them online, but they are often cost prohibitive.
