I’m sorry, but I did grow up in the era of Crocodile Dundee. I really can’t think or talk about shrimp without hearing Paul Hogan’s voice yapping about a barbecue. What can I say? I’m a child of the 80’s.

I’ve found that shrimp is hit or miss in terms of good deals. You gotta keep your eyes open. When you see a deal ($5 or less/pound in these here parts), grab it and run. Buy enough to stash in the freezer for a few months.  If you see a deal — or just want to splurge, be sure to make this grilled shrimp dish.

FishPapa, upon first trying this dish, said, “What did you put on this shrimp?” My confident reply was, “Awesome sauce.” He honestly couldn’t disagree with me. The simple flavors of the spice mixture complement the smoky shrimp perfectly. This is a favorite at our house.

What is the meaning of shrimp on the barbie?

Shrimp on the barbie is an Australian slang for barbeque. Hence the Crocodile Dundee reference!

It’s incredibly easy and quick to prepare, meaning you could realistically have dinner on the table in less than 30 minutes. I serve it with a rice pilaf and a quick caesar salad or steamed vegetables.

Any leftovers, I love serving on top of my Italian Salad Recipe.

Put another shrimp on the barbie!

What do I need to make this shrimp on the barbie dish?

    • Large shrimp – (raw, peeled, deveined, and tail on)
    • Olive oil
    • Spices – garlic powder, dried dill, paprika, and cayenne pepper
    • Lemon
    • Cilantro

What type of shrimp should I choose for this dish?

For this dish you have a few options.

    • Fresh or frozen – fresh is best, but you can definitely use frozen if you find some on sale.
    • Large – You want to choose either large (or jumbo) shrimp. Medium shrimp will cook up rather small.
    • Raw – Make sure to not use cooked shrimp for this dish otherwise they will come out overcooked and rubbery.
    • Deveined, peeled, tail on – Deveined and peeled is much easier but can be more expensive. So you can save yourself a few dollars if you are willing to devein and peel them yourself.

Can I make shrimp on the barbie indoors?

Absolutely! Of course this is a great whole 30 recipe for summer but you can use an indoor grill pan and enjoy this all year round for a quick easy dinner.  Serve it with a side of Remoulade for an extra kick of spice.

How to make this good and cheap:

Here are some of the strategies you can use to make this cilantro pasta recipe more economical:

    • Stock up on ingredients when they are on sale. For instance, when I see a great price on shrimp, I snatch them up and plan my meals around them. Or fill the freezer so that I have it when I want it. It’s one of the ways to cut a $100 from your grocery bill. It’s an easy way to save money on groceries without clipping a single coupon.
    • Compare prices. This year I’m trying my hand at keeping a price book so that I can know a good deal (for sure) when I see it.

    Ingredients

    • 2 lb large shrimp peeled
    • 2 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 1 teaspoon dried dill
    • dash ground cayenne pepper
    • 1 lemon cut into wedges, for serving
    • fresh cilantro (chopped) for garnish
    US Customary – Metric

    Instructions

    • Heat an outdoor grill for a medium-hot fire or a stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. If your grill has wide slots, use a grill pan or wok with small holes so the shrimp don’t fall through (or thread the shrimp onto metal skewers).
    • Place the shrimp in a large bowl and drizzle on the olive oil. Toss to coat.
    • In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, paprika, dill, and cayenne. Sprinkle this mixture generously on the shrimp, tossing to coat.
    • Cook the shrimp on the grill over direct heat or on the grill pan until pink and cooked through, about 10 minutes.
    • Transfer to a platter. Drizzle with lemon juice, sprinkle with cilantro, and serve with lemon wedges.
