    It comes in a plastic tube, is generally affordable, and makes a mean Breakfast Sandwich. But, how to cook breakfast sausage? There are actually four easy ways to make quick work of cooking this protein.

    Serve breakfast sausage as part of a Breakfast Charcuterie Board or in a Sausage Egg Hash Brown Casserole. You can even cook sausage patties or crumbles to freeze and store for later, a great component for Meal Prep Breakfasts. Patties are great sandwiched in split Self-Rising Flour Biscuits.

    Cruising through the meat department, you stumble upon the sausage section. There are breakfast sausage links and breakfast sausage patties all formed, kielbasa, and smoked sausage links.

    Some are fully cooked; some are uncooked. The cheapest and best deal are the tubes of bulk sausage that you will need to cook yourself at home.

    Why Make This

    Breakfast sauage is a great morning protein to include in Meal Prep Breakfasts. You can shape it into balls for Breakfast Bowls, cook it in patties to add to sandwiches, or cook up crumbles to add to Breakfast Burritos or casseroles.

    It’s an easy freezer meal prep. Whether you cook sausages in patties or crumbles, be sure to stash some away in the freezer to quickly add to meals without any hassle.

    Ingredients

    All you need is a 1-pound tube of breakfast sausage. There are usually several varieties at the store, including spicy, sage, and all-natural.

    If you buy frozen sausages or store it in the freezer prior to cooking, be sure to thaw it. A little icy-ness is okay since it will slice more cleanly, but you want it mostly thawed.

    If you are cooking breakfast sausages as links or patties, you’ll also need an instant read meat thermometer.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Here’s how to cook breakfast patties:

    You can cook sausage patties in a nonstick skillet, in the oven or in the air fryer. They are great for sandwiches and for serving on the side of a breakfast plate.

    If the sausage comes in a tube, you’ll need to cut it into patties first.

    To cut the sausage log into patties:

    Remove the plastic and place the entire log on a cutting board. Cut it in half with a thin sharp knife. Cut each half in half again. Cut each of those portions in half again. You should have eight patties. Reshape them if needed.

    To cook on the stove:

    Place the sausage patties in a single layer in the skillet and fry for 10 to 15 minutes over medium heat, turning occasionally. Sausage should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

    Drain on paper toweling before serving.

    To cook in the oven:

    Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Distribute the patties evenly and place in the oven to bake at 375 for 15 to 20 minutes, turning once. Sausage should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

    To cook in the air fryer:

    Line the bottom basket with aluminum foil and the top basket with parchment paper. Distribute the patties evenly and place in the oven to bake at 370 for 15 to 17 minutes, turning once. Sausage should reach an internal temperature of 160 degrees F.

    Here’s how to cook breakfast sausage crumbles:

    Sausage crumbles are easiest cooked in a skillet on the stove. It is great for adding to casseroles, Breakfast Burritos, and wraps.

    To cook sausage crumbles:

    Unwrap the tube of sausage and place the meat in the skillet. Break it into small chunks with a wooden spoon or wooden spatula. Cook, stirring for 8 to 10 minutes over medium heat, until the meat is cooked through and browned in spots.

    You can cook sausage in a skillet, oven, air fryer, or on the grill. Each is delicious, just make sure that the sausage is completely cooked before serivng.

    Is it better to cook sausage in a pan or oven?

      Not a clue why but cooking sausage patties in cast iron makes them tender and delicious whereas nonstick makes the patties tough.

      I make my own breakfast sausage with ground turkey and seasonings. Pretty easy to make a big batch and freeze. Also healthier for you.
