Popsicles are probably pretty cheap as far as things go. With a coupon, you can probably get them for a song. But, if you’ve read the ingredients label, you know that they are far from healthy. You might as well feed your kids water and corn syrup with a little food coloring thrown in for good measure.
Homemade ice pops, on the other hand, are pretty easy to make, plus, they’re healthier, too.
I’ve been experimenting with different mixtures of fruit and honey to make our own popsicles. With sweet, ripe fruit, you don’t need to add much more. I even let the kids eat them for breakfast!
You can use whatever ripe fruit you have on hand. Simply sweeten to taste with honey. You can even layer the mixture with yogurt if you like. Check out this post on how to make homemade popsicles for easy tips and things to avoid.
Recipe: Homemade Plum Ice Pops
- 6 plums, pitted
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- In a food processor fitted with a metal blade, puree the plums until very soon. Add the honey and vanilla extract. Adjust sweetener to taste.
- Pour the mixture into ice pop molds. Freeze until firm.
- Once firm, remove from molds. You may need to run the mold under warm water for a bit to help it loosen from the mold. Serve immediately or store in the freezer.
