3 Sweet Ways to Enjoy Yogurt

I’m a foodie girl. I love to eat.

When I’m not eating, I’m thinking about eating. Or watching movies about eating. Or reading books about eating. I haven’t quite decided if that’s a good thing or not.

Please tell me that I’m not the only one who does this? Who lists meal planning as an all-time favorite pastime? Who can recount all the great places to eat in any town she visited? Who can tell you what store sells the best baguette?

I’m currently reading French Women Don’t Get Facelifts. Yes, really. It’s by the same author who wrote the French Women Don’t Get Fat series. I’ve always enjoyed Mireille Guiliano’s writing even if I don’t always believe her widespread assumptions about an entire culture.

She makes me think. And I like that.

While this newest book was a little slow for me to warm to, I’m loving it now that I’m about halfway through. These French lady books always do a good job in reminding me about food and my priorities. This one is no different. In fact, already she’s validated a couple conclusions that I’ve come to in my forties:

  • Sugar is not my friend, neither is too much alcohol. I’m not getting tipsy on either of them, but they do seem to add some pounds.
  • Secondly, once those pounds get on, they are really hard to shake. I don’t remember that Ms. Guiliano had scientific references to back it up, but it’s sure been the case for me. During the last few years, it’s been super easy to gain a few pounds and remarkably hard to lose them.

One of her food recommendations that has also proven true for me is the merits of yogurt. A few years ago I weaned myself off sweetened yogurt and have grown to love the taste of plain yogurt. I feel better when I make yogurt a regular part of my meal plan. It’s a great breakfast, lunch, or snack that I really look forward to. Even for dessert!

If you want to make yogurt a bigger part of your days, consider these ways:

Since our family is currently on a sugar fast, sweetened yogurts are out, whether the kids like it or not. I was disappointed to see that all the Trader Joe’s yogurts now contain sugar. It seems to me that they used to have a fruit-sweetened yogurt. Instead we’re enjoying yogurt in these other sweet ways:

By itself

Yogurt drizzled with honey or maple syrup is pretty good. Have you tried that? Super yum.

With granola and fruit

We love yogurt piled high with granola and fresh fruit. Our current favorite granola recipes are these:

If we have fresh berries on hand, we throw those into the mix, else we thaw frozen berries or cherries. We also like it in a type of Breakfast Banana Split. Top a split banana with yogurt, granola, and chopped fruit.

While it’s not exactly granola and fruit, I do enjoy this smashup of the French lady’s Miracle Breakfast Cream.

In a smoothie or popsicle

Plain yogurt can be on the tart side, even in smoothies. I’ve found that including a banana and sweeter fruit helps it, as does a bit of Honey SyrupStrawberry Mango Smoothie with Banana is a favorite since I typically have frozen berries and frozen mango on hand.

If there’s any left, I freeze the mixture into popsicle molds. I recently bought these ice pop molds that make cute little yogurt push-up pops.

These are pretty simple ways to make plain yogurt tasty and sweet without the addition of sugar. Buy a bulk container and make some yummy yogurt treats this week.

  1. I recently read French Women Don’t Get Fat for the first time. While I don’t plan to follow all of her guidelines (no Leek Soup for me), I have come away with some very helpful tips and suggestions for eating better. Yogurt is one of them. I have a BIG sweet tooth so to start eating plain, tart yogurt was a daunting task. I have tried it with honey or with some fresh fruit. I find that my favorite is just honey! I have also tried my own variation of her “Magical Breakfast Cream” which was quite delicious also. I think this is something I can stick with long term.

  2. I know with honey is more authentically Greek, but that is not a method I am personally excited about. I like it best with fresh fruit and/or mixed in with granola. or just a nice scoop all by itself. I agree, it took getting used to the plain since I was used to the sweetened, but now I do not even like the sweetened one. Unless it is soft-serve frozen like an ice cream, since that is a completely different animal. :)

    I also agree that those pounds go on super easily and take ages and ages of work to take back off. Blech.

  3. I hope that Guiliano moves on from the French Women Don’t books. I found myself skimming Facelifts because there wasn’t much new information. I like the way she writes, though.

    • I thought there was lots of new ground in terms of plastic surgery and hormone therapy, two things that kinda bored me. The parts that I really enjoyed were probably old territory: nutrition, etc. But, I did like her emphasis on attitude. I tend to call myself old when I should really stop.

  4. After realizing that ounce per ounce, soda and yogurt have the same sugar content, we switched to plain and even make it from scratch! We usually add a bit of honey or jam, preferably some from my own stash of last summer’s bounty:) I like to add some dry milk when making it, so it’s thicker.

  5. I love yogurt, and I too have made my own before. I use yogurt in place of mayo- despite having spent 30 years in Ohio, I can’t stand it. Also last week I added some into my mashed potatoes, which turned out pretty yummy.

    I even got rid of my old yogurt maker with 5 little cups because after finding and using the slow cooker method many times, I knew I’d never go back to using the stove, thermometer, and making tiny batches.

  10. We use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream (we don’t buy sour cream anymore). I love it with Mexican food. Love it!
    And my two-year-old loves it for “dippin’ sauce.”

  11. I just made my own overnight crockpot yogurt! I used the recipe at practical stewardship posted earlier and it’s good! Now I’m going to use it in some of Jessica’s recipes.

    • Isn’t that fun when it turns out?!

      • It made a lot so I’ve used some for a Greek yogurt marinade for chicken, which was really good, and some that I mixed with fresh strawberry puree and a little sugar to make fro-yo popsicles, also really yummy. And I’ve used some in place of sour cream to top my Mexican Chicken Soup. Next time I’ll make low fat yogurt, but use the stove top instead, because it really takes a long time in the crockpot and it isn’t necessary to cook it that way. But making it is so much less expensive than buying it!

  12. One of my recent favorites is variation of the Morning Cream idea: yogurt, oats and chia seeds mixed together with homemade yogurt. Then I add whatever fruit is available. My homemade yogurt isn’t as firm as the store bought so the chia seeds are a pretty essential component.

    My oldest combines Greek yogurt, Uncle Sam’s cereal (the one with flaxseeds) and maple syrup for a stick-to-your-ribs breakfast.

    • I’ve found that different brands taste more tart than others. Also, the higher the fat content the less tart. I experimented until I found a brand I liked. I really like the Mountain High (not low fat) one. It tastes like dessert when piled with granola and fresh berries. I probably was very liberal with my maple syrup in the beginning. :)
