Favorite Fall Cookbooks

Cheese Soup with Zucchini, Broccoli, and Carrots

This past week we have been inundated with rain — at least by San Diego standards. It’s really been a switch after the 107 degree heat wave we had previously. Ouch!

Figures that I would make soup on the hottest day of the year!

Needless to say, we welcomed the cooler weather that the rain brought, and it has helped it feel like Fall around here. Some of my favorite cookbooks are those that I bust out during the fall and winter.

Here are a few I love:

A Feast of Soups

I received A Feast of Soups as a wedding gift. And it has been an invaluable asset in the kitchen some 16 years later. I love the instruction offered in this book. It really does teach you almost everything you need to know about soup making.

Just don’t rely on the recipes alone. You need to get cozy in a chair and really read this book. (The recipes are good — don’t get me wrong.) It’s the knowledge that the author imparts about methodology that I find really helpful.

Don’t let the retro cover fool you. This book is a gem.


Autumn is a treat. Not only is it filled with delicious recipes, prefect for fall, but it is also a beauty to behold. Each page is a work of art, watercolor paintings depicting a number of fall scenes.

The author, Susan Branch, is the hostess with the mostest in my book. She seems to really capture the excitement of holding a feast and she’s cognizant of what works for children as well.

Plus, I have a soft spot for vintage homes, quilts, and all things homey. This book has all that — with some great recipes to boot!

The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook

One of these days I need to breakdown and buy a new copy of The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook. Mine is falling apart in the middle. I’ve used it weekly for the past 9 years since I first bought it.

As Fall gets under way, we enjoy more baked goods to warm us up and fill our tummies. A bread machine is invaluable to have. This book explains the science of bread and how a bread machine condenses the bread making experience.

Again, this is a book to read — not just use the recipes. You can learn so much!

NYM Make-Ahead and Freeze CV 450Not Your Mother’s Make-Ahead and Freeze Cookbook

When the cooler temps hit, I want to start squirreling food away for winter. For some reason I feel so much better having a full freezer. I’ve been “freezer cooking” for 17 years now. Our family’s recipes for the freezer are compiled in this tome, my first cookbook: Not Your Mother’s Make-Ahead and Freeze Cookbook.

You’ll find tasty recipes that even picky eaters will like as well as the 411 on how to prep food en masse and for the freezer.

    My fave cookbook is the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. I use it mostly for the baking and dessert recipes, but I LOVE the the first part of the book that explains ALL the basics to a new cook- right down to different kinds of pans. There’s a page full of pictures of all varieties of mushrooms, a page of grains (with rice and pasta), and a great substitutes page. A perfect gift for a newlywed or a new cook!

  2. “Home Cooking” and “More Home Cooking” by Laurie Colwin. These really are books you sit down to read, and I love that recipes are treasures to find in her stories about cooking. I found my favorite chocolate cake recipe in her pages, as well as a creamed spinach recipe that made me love spinach.

  4. Thanks to you I purchased The Bread Lover’s Bread Machine Cookbook when I found it at a used bookstore this summer. I love it! Thanks for the recc. 🙂 I also really like the Taste of Home cookbook. I received it as a wedding gift and have found quite a few recipes in there that are keepers over the past year and a half!

    I borrowed the Bread Machine Cookbook from the library because you suggested it was a great book and you were absolutely right! I am looking to purchase it now. My favorite recipes are the random recipes I have collected by tasting something delicious and asking for the recipe. I have made these special recipes into a book and it is a go to book through all seasons!

  6. Thanks to your recommendation, I asked for my own copy of the Bread Lover’s Bread Machine cookbook (I kept renewing the borrowed copy from the library) for my bday and hubby found it on ebay for a good price. I love it! That’s my #1 right now with breads & rolls to dip into the yummy soups.

    I don’t have a standby cookbook for Fall (although “Autumn” in your list peaked my interest), but I do like visiting Epicurious.com this time of year for their new recipes (same as published in their magazine) for new soup ideas.

  7. I love Susan Branch’s Autumn Cookbook! I’m also enjoying Recipes from the Root Cellar, a library book which I’d like to buy. Another favorite is William Sonoma Comfort Food.
