Cherry Limeade Recipe

Cherry Limeade is a fun and refreshing drink. At our house I’m making it with lime and tart cherry juice instead of dyed syrups and artificial flavors.

Years ago we lived in Olathe, Kansas with a Sonic just around the corner. We didn’t have Sonic in California at the time, so we were pretty smitten with their vast array of icy beverages, particularly the Cherry Limeade. It was a toss-up for me between that and the Vanilla Coke, but the Cherry Limeade was special. I could get Vanilla Coke at Walmart! It seemed at the time that Sonic had cornered the market on Cherry Limeade.

Over the years I’ve tried to recreate it at home, but it seemed that you had to buy artificial cherry syrup in order to make it really taste right.

A few weeks ago, I decided to give it another go. This time I bought lime juice as well as tart cherry juice. A few stirs of the spoon and a few different proportions of sweetener to juice to club soda later and I think we have a winner, folks!

We tested this a few different ways, with sugar and with honey. My kids preferred the version mixed with sugar instead of honey. The honey flavor does try to overpower the cherry and lime flavors. Choose which sweetener you prefer.

Since the lime and cherry juices are not dirt cheap, I am leaning toward sugar since it’s a little more inexpensive. I like to make this with club soda so that it’s a fizzy drink, but you can make it with filtered water if you prefer a flat drink instead.

If you’ve got fresh limes and frozen cherries to use for garnish, you’ll have a super fun drink for any hot summer day. I love it that it’s made from all natural ingredients without dyes and funky stuff.

Love Cherry Limeades! Can’t wait to try this. Where did you purchase the tart cherry juice?

    • I bought mine at Target, the Knudsen brand. They had it on Cartwheel recently. But, I’ve also seen it at Kroger/Ralphs and Sprouts. At Sprouts, I found two different brands. Be sure to get Just Tart Cherry. Black cherry doesn’t work. I tried that last summer. Ha!

  2. Yay! Thank you! I occasionally want a Cherry Limeade, and then I remember I don’t really like the way they taste (fake). This I will try!

  3. Thanks for the recipe. My daughter and my husband were excited to try it out. They could drink Soniccherry limeades every day. All I had was key lime juice. Not quite the same. Not bad just not quite the same. Next trip to the grocery store I’ll pick up regular lime juice and try again. Thanks again. 🙂
