What’s on Amy’s Plate?

My family likes salsa. A lot. But what we really crave is good salsa, the kind that tastes like summer and begs you to eat just one more chip…even though you’ve already had three too many.

Finding the perfect salsa isn’t as easy as you would think. For years we tried countless recipes from cookbooks and foodie websites. We chopped, blended, cooked, and grew our own ingredients. Finally, I
broke down and bought jars of salsa with fancy labels and high price tags, hoping that maybe they would have that “it” factor we desired. No luck.

I gave up and went back to buying the mass-produced jars from the grocery store shelves. They were nothing special, but at least they were cheap.

Then one day, it happened. I was clicking around Good (Cheap) Eats when I came across FishMama’s Homemade Salsa. Having already tried every salsa recipe known to man, I was a bit skeptical of this one. It looked too easy, but I decided to give it a try. I didn’t know it yet, but my fruitless searching had come to an end.

I don’t exactly remember my reaction when I first tried this recipe, but I think I may have cried. If I didn’t, I should have. It’s just that good. Seriously. My family loves this stuff. Yes, I said loves. And I meant it. We love it so much that I mix up a fresh batch every week or two.

What I don’t love is the process of making it. It should be quick and easy. It doesn’t require any unusual ingredients or difficult techniques, but it gives me pain. Literally.

You see, I have very sensitive hands, and the jalapeno peppers left my fingers burning for hours. I know that I could wear gloves, but I never seem to have gloves and salsa ingredients in the house on the
same day. On top of that, I’m a bit lazy when it comes to chopping fresh herbs. Love to eat them, hate to chop them.

Still, our affection for this salsa compelled me to suffer through the making so we could enjoy the eating. Then I had a light bulb moment. My food processor! Duh. I’m still not sure why I didn’t think of it sooner. Now, I no longer dread making one of my family’s favorite foods.

  5. Love salsa. I’ve never made it truly homemade. Closest I’ve come is mixing a can of Rotel with a can of diced tomatoes which makes for a pretty tasty salsa even if it isn’t authentic or homemade.
    I added my new favorite French toast recipe.

  8. I just wanted to say that our family also LOVES your salsa recipe. I add in some extra cumin and garlic, and it beats every jarred salsa we have ever tried! Thanks!

  9. After a bad jalapeno incident I keep a box of latex gloves (from the pharmacy department) in the pantry for hot pepper chopping. One box has 50 gloves and I’ve found I really only need a glove on the hand holding/guiding the peppers, not on the hand holding the knife. I also use plastic wrap around my hand in a pinch.
