Don’t buy processed stocks and broths. You can make your own for less money and better flavor. Now that summer is over, we should see more and more sales on whole chickens, turkeys, and roasts. This is good news. Don’t be intimidated by cooking the whole bird. You can easily roast a small chicken or […]
Despite all the back to schooly stuff going on, summer’s not over. Live up the lingering days of the season with these Spicy Sausage Burgers. Despite the fact that the kids and I are finishing our first week of school, the calendar and the warm weather both concur that summer is still here. Fall doesn’t […]
Ditch the canned chili. You can make your own bowl of red or topping for a hot dog in just minutes. Great taste without the wait. As we research our trip to Europe we are learning so much about different cultures and norms. I put a moratorium on all children’s spending until after the trip. […]
Want some easy freezer meals without heating up your summertime kitchen? Well, burger up, folks! Today I took the kids down to Balboa Park for a free museum visit. San Diego County residents get free admission to select Balboa Park museums on Tuesdays. We’ve lived here for 5 1/2 years and NEVER done it. I’ve always […]
I’ve been on a ground turkey kick. Part of it is an effort to reduce our red meat. It’s probably not that good for us to eat it as often as we were, plus it’s getting more expensive. I just can’t swing it when the kids could easily eat two to three pounds in one sitting. We’re enjoying it twice a week, which is good.
I didn’t used to like ground turkey, but since I tried Trader Joe’s, I’m hooked. (Sorry to all you people who don’t have TJ’s or don’t like it. I fell out of love with Trader Joe’s a few years ago, but I’m finding ways to make their products and prices work for me, and it’s working really well.)
Anyway, this dish is the antithesis of what I would have made five years ago when I was a sworn beefeater.
Spend ten minutes prepping tonight’s dinner. This crockpot chili bean soup is a crowd-pleaser. Things are starting to heat up now that April is well under way. I got a bit of a sunburn at Legoland earlier this week. Summer approaches! Warm weather aside, I still have been firing up the crockpot, particularly for those […]
Stir up a pot of this quick meat sauce that is perfect on spaghetti or other pasta. Quick to prepare and freezer-friendly, it’s a great addition to your meal rotation. Pasta is a regular go-to meal at our house, particularly when all other meal plans fly out the window. I almost always have a couple […]
Homemade beef stew is homey and comforting. It’s also so easy to make, you’ll wonder why anyone would think to ruin it in a can. Beef stew is one of my comfort foods. Prepped in the morning to simmer all day in the slow cooker, it’s a luscious melange of beef, vegetables, herbs, and broth. […]
Wow your dinner guests with this simple yet filling ragu. It’s quick and easy which allows you to pull out the stops for presentation and side dishes. I’m sometimes so amazingly stunned by the beauty of the slow cooker. It seems illogical that you can dump a bunch of things in a pot and come […]
I’ve been leaning on my slowcooker a lot lately, particularly for soups and chilis. These are recipes that lend themselves well to slow cooking and allow me to do other things while they do the work. This Easy Slow Cooker Chili really is easy. Cook up meat and onions, open some cans, dump some spices, […]
