Have you ever made homemade croutons? They are so worth the ten minutes that it takes to prep them. They add crunch and texture to soups and salads. And homemade tastes so much better than the box!

Ironically, while homemade croutons taste AMAZING, they actually come from pretty humble beginnings. They’re best made with bread that’s too dry for eating in a sandwich or serving in a bread basket.

My local grocery stores regularly sell marked down “day-old” bread for cheap. I snatch these up to make French toast, homemade bread crumbs, or homemade croutons.

The other night it took me just a few minutes to chop bread and toss it with some olive oil and herbs. I slid a small pan into the toaster oven while I prepared the rest of the meal. Our Caesar Salad that night was so good with homemade croutons.

    Hi Jessica: Hope you had a wonderful anniversary weekend! I love that you’re posting videos. They’re so nice to watch. I’m sure glad I saw this one. I make homemade croutons for a cream of onion soup that I make in the winter mostly when we’re having company. Your way is much easier and I’m sure much healthier too. Like you I sprinkle on garlic powder an oregano but Italian seasoning sounds nice too. I brown my croutons on the stove in butter and of course I have to keep adding butter because it all gets absorbed. During browning is when I add my seasonings. It takes forever because I can only brown enough cubes that fit into the pan in batches. I really like your way so much better and I’m going to visit the shopping cart in the store this week that sells day old bread and try this. Mine taste really good but I like your way better. It’s easier and more healthy. Thanks!

  2. How did I miss the cinnamon toast crouton recipe? That is going to be a huge hit here! I have to hide croutons, too. This will make a great decoy batch to preserve the salad croutons. I make decoy batches of cookies as well. One to take the edge off the cookie appetite, and one for later consumption.
