In case you didn’t know, I’m a regular writer for one of my favorite sites, The Kitchn. I love what they do there and their mission to help people live happier, healthier lives through their kitchens and homes and am honored to get to contribute.

This year I have the privilege of writing an ongoing column, called The Smart Shopper, offering tips and tricks for eating well while staying under budget. You can read all my past posts here.

Recently, I shared a post, entitled, 8 Grocery Shortcuts for Easy, Wholesome Dinners. Here’s where I’m coming from:

The Internet and our grandmothers’ recipe boxes are stuffed with quick-fix recipes that go something like this: “Pour a can of cream of mushroom soup over chicken breasts. Bake one hour.”

For most of my childhood, that style of dish was one of my favorite things to make. I felt like a real cook, preparing dinner all by myself, yet doing it so quickly and simply. As I get older, I crave the simplicity of those recipes, but without the preservatives and tinny, canned flavor.

  1. I agree with the chicken tenders! I buy mine for Aldi and they are so easy to use when you need to cook dinner in a hurry. Pot pie. Chicken tacos. The options are endless.

    One of my old standbys to get dinner on the table quicker and to save time in the kitchen is to buy one of those rotissieri chickens at the supermarket. They’re inexpensive, already cooked and there’s so many options of what to do with them including eating them as they are. Sometimes I make chicken salad out of them for sandwiches for lunch or sometimes, I take off all the meat and use it for a stir fry. Other times, I cut up the chicken, add veggies, chicken broth and noodles or rice to make a quick soup, or pulled bbq chicken sandwiches, just to name a few. These little jewels present lots of opportunities when time is tight or when you just don’t feel like roasting a chicken yourself.

  4. Where I shop shredded cheese and block cheese are the same price per ounce. If I am going to cook with it, I buy the shredded. For salads, I prefer to shred it myself since I think it tastes better as do my kids. I always have jars of marinara on hand. I know it’s relatively easy to make and freeze. I know the jars have lots of corn syrup. I like the jarred stuff and it is so quick and easy to pull together a pasta dish if the sauce is simply open and pour. The only item on your list that I do not occasionally buy is bagged lettuce. I do not like the taste. My family is perfectly happy to eat it, but I do not like the taste from the ascorbic acid used as a preservative. Overall, I agree with Molly, I have ZERO GUILT buying some help from the grocery store. It is still cheaper than eating out and more often than not it is still healthier as well.
