Naturally Sweet Treats

I’ll admit it, my kids aren’t super thrilled that I haven’t gone back to all our pre-sugar fast ways. But, they also aren’t complaining too much. They know that we ate really well during the six weeks we abstained from almost all processed sugars. (We had a few moments when it just wasn’t feasible to do it.)

And this mama wonders if it was a coincidence that we weren’t sick during the fast, but then GOT sick (and how!) immediately after the fast ended. Not going to draw too many unscientific conclusions, but someone in the house has been ill for the past three and a half weeks! Oy!

Instead of beating my kids over the head with a no-more-sugar mandate, I’ll slowly building up my arsenal of things that we enjoy that are naturally sweetened. My new book is full of 100+ recipes for drinks, snacks, and popsicles that are naturally sweetened, and here are a few more things that are super tasty — as long as your not expecting a sugar load.

  1. I’m going to try some of these. We avoid HFCS (and artificial sweeteners) on principal and as I have done very little baking since Christmas, we haven’t been consuming a whole lot of sugar lately. I have been wanting to cut back further for a long time but expected complaints. To that end I had been quietly using a quarter to a third less sugar than recipes called for.

    I baked the other day, keeping to the reduced sugar ratio and was surprised to hear comments about how sweet everything was – specifically date bran muffins (we like them with cheese) and an oatmeal bar with a cranberry filling. I underestimated my family! I told them that I had reduced the sugar and they all agreed that I could reduce it further. Some non-bakers suggested cutting out half of what I did use! I may have heard music…

    On the other hand, I noticed a little bit of moodiness following the “reduced sugar” which confirms that further reductions and substitutions might be a really good idea. So I’m going to go back and reread all your sugar fast posts now, because I’m on board with this. And I’m not alone – bonus! Thanks!
