I’m Here, Really: Updates from FishMama’s Kitchen

You may have noticed that I’ve been a little quiet lately. Time is just slipping away from me! The last month has just flown by. But, I’m here — and I’ve got all kinds of recipes just waiting to be posted.

This past week, I had my first complete physical — ever. You know, full lab work up and everything. And to be honest, the experience kind of threw me for a loop. My husband keeps asking, “You okay?”

The test results did not show anything serious; a mild infection, anemia, and low Vita D. All those things can be treated with good food choices, antibiotics, and vitamin supplements. And if I were a glass half-full person when it came to health issues, then I would say, “Look, my cholesterol is great, my weight is fine, my blood pressure is fine.”

Truly, there is much to be thankful for.

I get my first mammogram this coming week; everyone says the new machines are better than the old ones. And, hopefully, this lab has the new machine!

That said, I’ve got lots of things to report on the Food Horizon:

  • I signed us up for an organic produce delivery service. I’m excited to get quality organics for better than store prices.
  • The book, The Unhealthy Truth : How Our Food is Making Us Sick–and What We Can Do About It by Robyn O’Brien is waiting for me at the library. I saw a short video talk by her, and I was intrigued. She was a food analyst before having children, so she backs up her assertions with some hard evidence. Oh my!
  • My book is coming back from my editor this week, so things are gonna get crazy this month. Two or three edits and revisions are supposed to go down in September. PRAY for me!
  • School starts for me and the kids on the 6th. As such, I need to have three meal plans per day ready to roll. Planning and preparation are going to be key to my survival this year as I teach five grades, from kindergarten to ninth grade. Heaven, help me!

  1. Good for you for taking the time to go take care of you! That has been my mission this summer, too. I had the “works” done as well. I also had low Vitamin D levels and you would be amazed how much better you feel once you get those Vitamin D levels back up.

    Yep, did the mammogram thing this summer too. Good news was that it hurt much less this time than last time because the machine was new technology. Its also faster since they are getting digital images instead of using x-ray films now.

  2. I just finished that book not too long ago and it was great. It was the first food Inc sort of book that I have read that didn’t make me feel guilty or freaked out and want to destroy everything in my pantry. She gives gobs of great information, but also is real about it.
    Mammograms aren’t that bad…unless you have a call back. Then the words “you might have some bruising” come out. Good luck!

  3. My husband and I go and get our physicals done together, every year. I have a chronic illness so i am at the doctor’s more often but for my hubby the yearly physical is the only time he see’s the doc. Doing it together keeps us both accountable. Plus for something like anemia, it’s better to know it’s an issue before it becomes a problem.

  4. Good luck with the mammogram. The procedure is fairly painless but be prepared for a callback. I had my first one this year and they said my left breast had some calcifications so I had to go back (the second series also showed abnormalities but I didn’t have to wait for the reading)and I’ll have to go in December. They say the first series are usually where they are pretty picky and extra careful even if alot of the abnormalities aren’t malignant carcinomas.

  6. I am glad you got a physical! I hadn’t made the connection – my vitamin D level was really low. I am taking a prescription (50,000 iu i x week) plus 3 calcium plus d a day. I am feeling much better.
