Each week a featured foodie* will share his or her plate and then the rest of us will get a chance to link up our own posts or share in the comments what good cheap eats we’ve been enjoying.

What’s on Melissa’s Plate?

Today Melissa shares her family’s favorite pasta sauce. It’s amazing how inexpensively you can create your own sauces, particularly if you have a garden. And they taste so much better than the canned or jarred varieties!

This is my homemade marinara. I made it from all organic ingredients directly from our organic garden and to “sneak” in a few more veggies I added 1 medium sized zucchini diced. My family loved it! Served with Ronzoni SmartTaste and Whole Wheat Pasta. I do half whole wheat and half white pasta. I added a salad on the side (not pictured).

Melissa taught Home Economics on the high school level for 11 years before becoming a mom. In June 2005 after her son came home from Guatemala, she made the decision to leave her career and become a SAHM. In order to achieve this goal and live on one income, her family had to make some drastic changes in their lifestyle. Follow her journey of frugality at Stockpiling Moms.

I’ve never made marinara from scratch. I’ll have to give this a try.
